The Pongola Cane Riders is a charity motorcycle club that strives to assist people within the community of Pongola in various ways and to improve the general image of motorcycling. Funds that were generated during past Cane Rallies were used to financially assist the AIDS orphanage in the local township, donations to the Pongola Emergency Medical Fund, donating complete PA sound systems to Schools in the Tribal Areas and assisting under-privileged children on an ongoing basis at Pongola Academy, by supplying them with funding for various basic schooling needs. The Club is in existence from 1997 and currently has 27 full colored members, The official colors consist of a Springbuck waistcoat with the Cane Riders logo on the back, this unique waistcoat identifies the club from a distance and we are referred to by many as the “Riet Kappers” (Afrikaans for the sugarcane harvesters). We are affiliated to the NNMA (Northern Natal Motorcycle Association) and have club meetings every first Tuesday of each month at the Clubhouse. We strive to support many of our neighboring club events and allocate 4 compulsory rallies that all club members should attend annually. Some of our members are real party animals and attend at least one rally each month.
The Pongola Cane Riders host the Cane Rally annually on the last weekend of June in Pongola town. The first official Cane Rally was held on the Magudu Mountain, 20km south of Pongola in the year 2000 and attracted 45 bikers from as far as Durban. The event has grown to approximately 1250 entrants in 2008 and the participants arrived from Cape Town, JHB, PTA, Secunda, Vaal Triangle, Freestate, Mpumalanga and KZN with the largest club attending the 2008 event “Streetwise” from Vereeniging. The success of this event is based on the South African rural farming hospitality rounded off with a feast of local “potjiekos” from heaven and a weekend of good entertainment, music, drags, stunts and a great party. |
